  Diabetic Association of India was founded in 1955 by a few doctors and prominent citizens who felt the need to create awareness of diabetes among the public, health care professionals and diabetic patients. Over the last 50 years, the Organisation has grown considerably and has over 12,000 members and 41 branches all over the country.

The Association has strived to make people conscious of diabetes and the associated long term risks and complication it involves. Series of lectures are held round the year for diabetics patients. A team of diabetologists and dieticians guide the diabetics in controlling their disease.

C.M.E.C. Courses are organized round the year for the benefit of family physicians. The Scientific Section of the D.A.I. holds an annual session jointly with A.P.I. National congress on diabetes is held once every three years. The D.A.I. encourages Research Scholars in diabetes and allied diseases by awarding orations like “Hodgkin Sanger Oration”. To encourage diabetics who have lived a complication free life, Gold and Bronze Medals are awarded periodically.

Since 1960 D.A.I. publishes a Quarterly Journal with a Scientific Section and an Education Section for it’s non-medical members. Articles from prominent diabetologists and eminent doctors on different aspects of diabetes are published in the journal which is invaluable to the medical practitioners and diabetic patients.

In the international field, the D.A.I. has been affiliated to the International Diabetes Federation and has the distinction of having two of its past Presidents Dr. S. S. Ajgaonkar and Prof. J. S. Bajaj as Honorary Presidents of I.D.F.

Not content with just spreading the knowledge of diabetes, the Association set up the All India Institute of Diabetes and S.L.Raheja Hospital in 1981. This is a specialized institution providing highly sophisticated care to diabetics including a modern artificial kidney dialyses unit and laser therapy for eye care. Over the years the Association has received generous donations which enabled it to now have a 300-bed state-of-the-art Hospital with Research and Education Wings. The Hospital has a large Intensive Care Unit, round the clock Dialysis services, well equipped Laboratory, Radiology & Imaging Department and Blood Bank. Operation Theatres with state-of-the-art equipment. The Hospital has a well attended Out-Patient doctors i.e. Diabetologists, Physicians, General Surgeons, Plastic Surgeons, Ophthalmologists, Orthopedic Surgeons, Oncologists, Nephrologists, Anesthetists, Cardiologists, Dermatologists, Urologists, Gynaecologists and others are attached to S.L.Raheja Hospital.

The Institute is also recognized for Post-Graduate training course in Diabetology by the University of Bombay. In addition, the College of Physicians & Surgeons also recognizes the S.L.Raheja Hospital for Post-Graduate Courses in the specialities of Diabetes, Anesthesia and Orthopedics.
